DIY: Halloween Tin Can Lights

If you’re looking to decorate your home in an easy and affordable way, try out these tin can lights. You can place them on the edges of your driveway, on your stairs (inside or out), or you can put ribbon in them and hang them like lanterns.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Clean and empty tin cans (big coffee cans will probably work the best)

  • Water (and a freezer)

  • Hammer

  • Large nail

  • Paint and paint brush

  • Sharpie the same color as your paint

  • Candles

  1. This project takes some preparation. The first step you will need to take is to fill the can with water and place it in the freezer until it is completely frozen. This will prevent the can from caving in or denting later in the process.

  2. The next step is drawing your design on the can with the sharpie. For this craft to work, the best idea is to make the design something simple, such as a word or an outline of a ghost or pumpkin.

  3. Now, place the can on something soft, such as a towel or a small pillow (this will help absorb shock and also keep the can still). Then, take your hammer and nail and poke holes all the way through the can along your sharpie design.

  4. Once you have all holes punched, run the can under hot water to melt the ice. Note: If the bottom of the can becomes uneven, just lightly hammer it out until it is flat again.

  5. Now, you can paint the can. The best color for this is going to be something dark, like black or brown, especially if you’re going to put it outside. You can use either acrylic paint or spray paint, but you may have to go back and poke through the holes again with a toothpick if the paint clogs them.

  6. Once the paint is dry, put a candle in the can and enjoy!
