McMourning for McDreamy

After last Thursdays episode of the hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy, viewers across the globe are horrorstruck. One of the last remaining original characters on the show, Derek Shepherd, (portrayed by Patrick Dempsey and commonly known as “McDreamy”) died after an intense vehicle collision. The show has explored countless story lines with Shepherd for 11 seasons, leaving an impact on millions of viewers.

“McDreamy” made his first appearance on the series pilot episode, and was featured in all 241 epsiodes. Yet throughout the years, he has touched many with his inspiring actions and dialogue, and many feel like it was not his time to go.

In fact, fans have started a petition to the creator and co-writer of the show, Shonda Rhimes, to bring Shepherd back. However, this is unlikely to happen, as the rest of the season has already been filmed to completion.

Though Shepherd’s Mcdeath was horrific, there are positives to this tragedy. His passing leaves room for exciting new plotlines, cast members, and episodes. Many fans might also take solace in the fact that Patrick Dempsey himself has made peace with the event, even saying that he was not interested in being on the show anymore. Dempsey would like to move on to better horizons.

That, however, does not mean that we can’t all cry in unison with Meredith Grey as she faces another “dark and twisty” adventure. Maybe if she meets someone new, then this time she will not have to convince him to pick her, choose her, or love her. Maybe this time, he will not even have a wife.
