Weekend Lock-Down

On Saturday April 25, 2015, a mother in Philadelphia allegedly locked her four children in the basement of their home. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the children were locked in the basement at 11P.M. on Saturday and were not rescued until 1:30P.M. the next day. The children were rescued after going without food, water or access to a restroom for 13 hours when one of them called 911 on a cellphone. The woman’s son and three daughters were evaluated at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, where they were found to be unharmed. The Kensington community was shocked by the event.

According to some of the family’s neighbors and friends, the children’s mother has been a hard working member of the community and regarded as a responsible parent. Now she faces multiple charges and must give up custody of her children to either relatives or the State of Philadelphia. The trial to decide the children’s and their mother’s future has yet to take place. Further information about the trial may or may not be shared with the public; the decision to release or withhold the date and outcome of the trial falls to the family, court system and any other party involved.
