Highway 321 has seen its fair share of danger and death. In June of 2013, an Alcoa man was killed in an accident resulting from the collision of a dump truck and a Dodge Caravan. Five other people went to the hospital to treat their injuries. One of whom was the truck driver himself and another being a young infant. Highway 321 was later opened after the area was cleared of the wreckage.
Now, a year later, a Maryville man was killed early Monday morning due to an accident involving two vehicles. Virgil D. Jones, 23, was walking on Highway 321 early in the morning in Friendsville near Big Springs Road before he was hit and killed. The accident occurred before morning light so it is possible that the drivers did not see Jones until it was too late.
So far, no charges or citations have been dropped onto anyone’s lap. No one has been charged with the crime yet. But it seems that this highway is not kind to those who drive it.
