The morning of December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the United States Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. Fighter planes and bombers bombarded Pearl Harbor and over twenty American naval ships, eight of which were battleships, were destroyed as well as several airplanes. Several thousand Americans and Hawaiian natives were killed in the catastrophe.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt( FDR) declared war the day after the event. Not long after the Japanese allied with the Germans and Italians against the U.S. It was official America had joined World War II.
A survivor of the event, Lois Arnwine, remembers it as a turning point in her life. She also recognized how it changed and influenced her life.
“ Some kids when you ask them if they remember December 7th, they do not know what December 7th is” and she that she felt like “ the younger generation will have a taste of it, and they too will be more patriotic”.
