On January 26, a small drone was found after it crashed into a tree at the White House. A radar system that is designed to detect flying objects such as missiles, planes and large drones failed to detect the drone. Questions were raised due to this, and many people wondered if the Secret Service could protect the president in a similar situation.

A man was operating the two-pound drone around 2 a.m. He was flying it around the White House for fun when he lost control of it. No one has said why he has not been charged with a crime, or why he was flying it that late.

The drone’s crash was the most recent breach of security. The other attacks consisted of a man armed with a knife gaining access into the building, or when a gunman fired into the White House while one of the president’s daughters was there.

The night the drone crashed, one of the Secret Service officers who was on the south grounds, heard and watched the drone, but was unable to bring it down. They said it was too small and flying to low to be detected by radar, and that it could be easily mixed up with a bird.

This incident was right after a meeting in Arlington, Virginia. This meeting focused on the dangers drones pose to the nation’s infrastructure and government facilities. The same type of drone was on display at the meeting as was the one that crashed into a tree at the White House. The only difference was that the one at the conference had three pounds of explosives packed onto it, so it could prove how easy it would be to use for an attack.
