Airplane Wreckage Found Fifty Years Later

Some climbers found a LAN Chile Douglas DC-3 plane that wrecked in the Chile’s Andes on April 3, 1961. Everyone on the plane was presumed dead when it had crashed. The people aboard the plane consisted of several Chilean soccer stars from the Green Cross soccer team, the coach Arnaldo Vasquez and some team staff and friends. They were heading back to Santiago after a game in Osorno.

The exact location of the wreckage is not being revealed because they do not want the wreckage to be a tourist attraction. Also, one of the hikers named Leonardo Albornoz said, “This story is being rewritten because they’re not where official publications indicated,” according to a Fox News Latino article.

Not everybody on the Green Cross team was on the flight however. They took a second plane that stopped at a few other places instead of going straight to Santiago, unlike the first plane. Unfortunately, most of the team was onboard the plane that had crashed in the mountains. The players that were not part of the crash decided to keep playing in the cup against Osorno Selección even though most of their team had disappeared and died. They ended up losing 0-1 and could not play in the cup anymore.
