Long Live the Queen!

On September 9th, 2015, Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest reigning monarch in British history.

Her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria, currently holds the title of longest-reigning monarch, reigning from 1837 to 1901 but this year, Elizabeth II will take it.

“It’s a very significant milestone,” said historian Dr. Kate Williams, in an interview with the Huffington Post. “The Queen will become the longest reigning British monarch in history.”

This is not the first milestone for the Queen during her reign. In December 2007, she took the title of the longest living monarch in British history, and the Queen is also the Guinness World Record holder for “most currencies featuring the same individual.” She has also sent an email, had a message put on the moon, directed a royal “walkabout” and had a public concert in her garden, things no British monarch had done before.

Preceded only by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, Queen Elizabeth II is the second longest-serving present head-of-state in the world.
