What's Love Got To Do With It?

February 14th, or Valentine’s Day, has been celebrated for quite a long time. In fact, it has been celebrated for so long that many people have forgotten how February 14th came to be known as our beloved Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day was originally a religious holiday to honor the Saint, Valentine of Rome. Aside from his name and place of his death, Rome, little is known about St. Valentine of Rome. It was not until the 14th century that Valentine’s Day began to be associated with love and romance.

Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a series of poems in which he referred to Valentine’s Day as a time for birds to find their mates and lovers as Valentines. Over time as the concepts of love and romance became more popular; Valentine’s Day became more popular as well. Before long, many of the traditions we still up hold today were born. The exchange of gifts between lovers, sending anonymous love letters or friendly Valentines and spending quality time with that special someone, are just some of the numerous traditions that started centuries ago. However the world we live in is constantly changing, new technology, phrases and trends are invented all the time.

With all the change that is constantly happening around us, it is no wonder that Valentine’s Day has changed a lot since the 14th century. Now Valentine’s Day cards mass-produced on both paper and digitally. Videos are given as gifts more and more often. Some people have even used social media to send digital Valentine’s Day gifts. The more creative inventors get, the more options creative young people have to try and woo that someone special. Whether you are a fan of Valentine’s Day or not, hopefully now you can rest assured, knowing that Valentine’s Day is not a random holiday with no reason to exist.
